My Most Read Work

Nikol Popovics

I'm a writer and designer who's always on the hunt for a good story. Whether it's visually or through the written word, I love helping others find their unique voice, because I believe that everyone has a story to tell.

I have over 5 years of professional experience, first as a reporter in Yellowknife NWT, where I told the kind of stories you only get in a small town. I then designed advertisements and obituaries before moving back to Calgary AB, where I worked at Postmedia in print production for all the major daily newspapers across Canada. I then established Lunchbox Editing, where I helped independent publishers with developmental and copyediting. Today, I manage a music studio, with over 400 students, 20 amazing teachers, and 1 incredible associate. I design promotional material for our various music programs, plan performance opportunities, and promote the studio by traditional marketing initiatives as well as digital ones, including social media.

Check out some of my articles and designs below. I would love to hear your story and help you tell it the only way that you can!

Writing with Lemons

Did life give you a lemon? By that I mean, did life throw a big event at you that forever changed your life? It gave me not one, not two, but three honking big ones last year. According to my therapist, and an article in University Hospitals, the five biggest stresses in life are death, divorce, moving, health issues, and financial change. I dealt with three out of the five. Yes, all in the same year.Life gave me lemons, all right. But that old saying about making lemonade just wasn’t very reali...

Is Your Creative Voice Risky? It Should Be.

In 1965 at the Newport Folk Festival, a musician stepped on stage and plugged his Fender Stratocaster into an amplifier. As he struck his first chord, the fans booed like a pack of howler monkeys. This small act, though seemingly insignificant, would spark a music revolution still felt today. The musician I’m talking about is, of course, Bob Dylan. As a folk artist, he was known to push the boundaries of music while giving the people what they wanted without confining himself to the status quo. B...

Want To Be A Writer? Get A Real Job

Maybe you’ve dreamed of quitting your boring 9–5 one day to make writing your living. Wake up, make up stuff up on the page then collect the check. You don’t even have to get out of bed to do it. The perfect way to make money, right? There are tons of articles out there about how much writing doesn’t pay, and writers shouldn’t quit their day jobs after signing that book deal. But let’s be honest, there’s still that small sliver of hope that maybe — just maybe — you’ll be the one who gets a gigant...

Ditch The Daily Word Count

If you do a search for any writing productivity method more than likely you’ll come across some sort of daily word count tracker. Those who are avid Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) participants swear by word count tracking, and understandably so. Tracking how much you write can helps many authors get to the end of their book. And when you tally up all the words you’ve written in a year? That number can look pretty impressive. But tracking word count is actually a poor measure of writing...
